Thoughtful, eager to learn and anxious to change the world
Jeffrey A. Reimer

On most Monday evenings, you will also find a collection of ChemE, BioE and other engineering students meeting to plan the next set of activities for BEAM (Berkeley Engineers and Mentors). This group of students brings engineering to life by volunteering at local schools such as Washington Elementary, [...] and Richmond High, as well as in the Fort Mason Home Away from Homelessness Program. These students create new engineering projects, games and other hands-on activities for communities that have few opportunities for extracurricular learning. The leadership team for BEAM meets with me a few times per semester, and they are brimming with enthusiasm and commitment for their profound call to service.

UPDATE: new room assignments

The beam DeCal (Elementary & Middle School section) will be meeting in 206 Wheeler starting next Monday (2.09), we are still meeting at 6 pm.

We will soon begin volunteering at a new beam volunteer site! Volunteering at Malcolm X Elementary will take place on Friday from 3 to 5. Half of the current Washington Elementary volunteers will be asked to move to Malcolm X.

beam returns for a second semester

beam will be returning this spring semester at its usual time (6-7pm), but in a NEW location: 775 Tan Hall UPDATE: 258/255 Dwinelle. We'd like to extend an invitation to ALL UC Berkeley students, regardless of major, to join us and participate in serving the science education needs of our Bay Area schools.

Our first decal meeting will be on January 26 (6pm, 775 Tan Hall). Returning decal students from last fall are encouraged to bring fresh new faces!

NOTE: All subsequent meetings will be held in 258/255 Dwinelle Hall.

Professors Jeff Reimer, Dorian Liepmann, and Albert Pisano have thrown their full support behind the launch of beam and our new decal, ChemE 98. Read an excerpt of their letter below, inviting all interested students to join beam as a mentor this semester. Or, read the full text.

“We are pleased to announce a new engineering youth mentorship DeCal/program - ChemE 98 - Berkeley Engineers and Mentors, which starts in the Fall of 2008. If you have some interest in mentoring the youth, applying science and engineering skills to lead and develop stimulating activities, planning and leading youth outreach effors, or just want to give teaching a try and have fun bettering the communities around you, we strongly urge you to consider ChemE 98. If your interes in engineering began with similar outreach programs, now is your chance to influence other students to give engineering a try.”
